Microsoft Purview is a service that was added to the AZ-900 exam in the 2023 revision. You may not be familiar with this service, but let’s start with an overview.

What is Microsoft Purview?
Microsoft Purview is a service for the comprehensive management and protection of an organization’s data. In short, it’s called Unified Data Governance.

Microsoft Purview was originally named “Azure Purview,” but it was reborn as an integrated platform that includes governance and compliance services such as “Microsoft Information Protection” and “Compliance Manager.”

Realistically, an organization’s infrastructure environment is rarely just one cloud. It’s common to have a hybrid configuration with existing on-premises environments or to use other public clouds such as AWS or GCP, as well as SaaS services such as PowerBI and Salesforce.
Microsoft Purview can discover and integrate an organization’s data across multiple environments, enabling comprehensive data management and protection. For example, it provides the following capabilities:
- Visualize data across the enterprise with data maps
- Classify sensitive information with data tagging
- Prevent sensitive information from leaking
For example, if someone tries to upload an Excel file containing customer data to their personal Google Drive, data loss prevention (DLP) policies can block this activity.
